Freight Farms' EU Partner Has the Coolest Office, Ever

Guest author: Hannah Dziura, Marketing Coordinator with our European partner

For most people, agriculture in the Netherlands invokes images of old fashioned windmills and farmers wearing wooden clogs. Despite popular belief, this small country is abundant with greenhouses and other innovative farming projects, and has become a global destination for cutting-edge agriculture.

Travel to Den Haag, home of the Dutch government and a number of international companies, and you’ll find a pioneering urban farming project called The New Farm. This project houses a sprawling rooftop greenhouse and aquaponic farm, a mushroom farm, an insect farm, and, of course, our very own Freight Farms shipping container all under one roof

Upon partnering with Freight Farms, we began searching for an office space that we could call home. It was immediately clear The New Farm was a perfect fit. The idea was to create an urban farming hub in the heart of the Netherlands, breathing fresh life into a dated building and transforming it into a space for innovative farmers and food startups to grow, harvest, and gather.  The transformation will be completed by the beginning of 2018, by which point the building will be a vertical farming hub hosting accelerator programs, startups, initiatives, and a food marketplace.

Urban Farmers, the first project to take root in the building, has  already begun to build a food-loving community in this space. The company hosts a daily marketplace with their own produce and local foods, along with extra events on location where participants can come to to enjoy food, music, and even yoga

The New Farm was the perfect place to land our demo Leafy Green Machine™. Since settling in almost 6 months ago, we have been busy hosting prospective farmers, testing new crops, and holding Farm Camp training sessions amongst the forward-thinking farmers we call neighbors. We've also had the chance to visit Freight Farmers ramping up their operations in Cyprus, Norway, and right here in the Netherlands! Each new farmer’s project has a unique goal to bring fresh produce to their respective communities.

As our full-time team dedicated to building the Freight Farms community across Europe continues to grow to support new farmers, we’re excited to become more involved with the urban farming movement in the Netherlands. If you’re interested in visiting our office and touring the Leafy Green Machine, please don’t hesitate to contact us: freightfarms@horticoop.nl
